JD is scheduled to be on the O'Reilly Factor tonight on Fox News Channel.

JD was embedded with Scott Thomas Beauchamp's unit this past May when they captured a Jaish al-Mahdi cell leader and rescued a Sunni man from being assassinated.

UPDATE:

You can watch the segment here.

Private Beauchamp as Private Zab
Written by JD Johannes
Friday, 27 July 2007

Army Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp is a walking talking cliche--the intelligent, educated, artistic grunt who is or wants to be a writer.

In the movie the Big Red One, Private Zab, an author, is thrust into WWII with the Army's 1st Infantry Division.

Beauchamp is Zab, which is actually to say Samuel Fuller--all the way down to the same infantry division.

Thanks to modern technology and possibly a well positioned female acquintance, Beauchamp was able to live out his meta theme without waiting until his deployment or the war was over.

Media Guidelines
Written by JD Johannes
Thursday, 26 July 2007

My favorite media guidelines were issued by Gen. Mark Gurganus and a Captain whose name I cannot remember.

General Gurganus tells his Marines to talk with the media about what they know.  If you're a fire-team leader, talk about what you do as fire-team leader.  If you're an AmTracker, talk about what you do as an AmTracker.

Gurganus continued explaining how there were questions for the Company Commander, Battalion Commander, the Colonel and the General and if the young guys get asked a question that is for the General, they should tell the reporter to ask the General.

The Captain had even better advice.  It went something like this:

Scott Thomas Veracity Solution
Written by JD Johannes
Wednesday, 25 July 2007

After the NYT/TNR back and forth of the certainty of Thomas' existence.  I proposed a simple solution to an ABC news reporter.

Have Thomas stand in front of something recognizable on FOB Falcon, while holding today's edition of Stars and Stripes.

Johannes to Thomas, Radio Check, Over

"Scott" you've caused quite a stir of late.  I really don't care who you are but I spent a little time around Falcon and think I know how to find you.

I'm guessing you are a member of 1-18 Infantry.  They are the primary unit out of Falcon with Brads.

A Friend in Need
Written by JD Johannes
Friday, 20 July 2007

I met Jeff Emanuel at FOB Falcon in Baghdad last May.  I was on my third three-mont trip.  He was on his first trip and he only had the ability to operate for a little more than a week.

I like to think I convinced him that he needed to spend weeks if not months in Iraq to understand it--but that would be giving myself too much credit.

He's set to embark again.  Hopefully we will cross paths again when I head back to Iraq in a few weeks.

Iraqis Agree With JD--or Vice Versa
Written by JD Johannes
Wednesday, 18 July 2007

I found this poll and guess what?  Only 27% of Iraqis think they are in the midst of a civil war.

Funny, I kinda thought that way when I spent 3 weeks in Baghdad.
